In
hardly any other opening does the second player get so many chances for an early
initiative as in the Chigorin Defence 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6. Among its practitioners
are A.Morozevich and I.Miladinovic, as well as various other strong grandmasters.
Nevertheless,
for a long time the Chigorin Defence had a dubious reputation. Only the success
of the players just mentioned, combined with the appearance of the first German
edition of this book in 2001 gradually changed this. This now thoroughly updated
essential work on the Chigorin offers 115 games scrutinised in detail, explains
all the strategic principles and therefore creates a solid theoretical basis
for the defence.
The author is a Ukrainian IM who now lives in Stuttgart/Germany. This book founded
his reputation as a respected theoretician.
“The
contents are first-class and the author has put a tremendous amount of work
into the book. Material is drawn from nearly all possible sources and the author
has added an abundance of original analysis, improvements, and sug-gestions
of his own.”
(Carsten Hansen on Chesscafe, Checkpoint May 2005)
“It
will not only become the Chigorin Defence bible for many years to come, but
it establishes the Chigorin as a sound defense deserving respect.” (John Watson,
The Week in Chess, Book Reviews #46)

The
Colle-Koltanowski System with d4, Nf3, e3, Bd3, c3, 0-0, Nbd2 is very popular
among club players. White builds up a kind of „fortress“, but at the same time
prepares to hand out some blows himself, e.g. the typical bishop sacrifice on
h7. In other cases he can rely on the characteristic queenside pawn majority
and go for the endgame.
This is a book about a typical „amateur opening“, but nevertheless Bronznik
refuses to go for the transfigured “Winning with“ approach. He does a very thorough
research and shows that, in fact, in many lines the best moves are still untested
- when many believe that in our computer age everything can be found in the
omniscient databases.
Fascinating are Bronznik’s analysis of the various sacrifices on the kingside
(Bxh7+, Bxh6 and so on), clear and fundamental is his explanation of the positional
themes. Due to the blend of basic things with advanced material this book should
be useful for average players, as well as for masters. Originating from Ukraine
and now living in Stuttgart (Germany), IM Valerij Bronznik is working as a chess
teacher. His first book about the Chigorin Defence (published in German language
in 2001) was much acclaimed. But especially in terms of teaching methods this
one is even better.

Occupying the territory where unorthodox and main-stream openings
meet, the Knight on the Left can undoubtly be a forceful weapon: The Dane Ove
Ekebjærg nearly became correspondence World Champion, playing 1.Nc3 exclusively!
This is the first full-length book about this interesting opening, unfolding a complete theory of 1.qc3; including several off-beat lines against semi-open defences like the Alekhine or the Caro-Kann. The author thoroughly explains the basic structures which supply huge scope for creativity. There is broad discussion of move order subtleties and transposition issues, so that the book deepens your understanding of opening play in general!
The author, FM Harald Keilhack, first attracted attention with his 1994 book on the Tarrasch Defence. He works as editor of the Schachverlag Kania and as chess correspondent for the Stuttgarter Zeitung. For this English language edition he has thoroughly updated the original German manuscript, published in 2003.
„After all, two of the best (in terms of both thorough coverage and independent analysis) openings books of the past decade have been devoted to these flank openings, namely Keilhack’s Knight on the Left: 1.Nc3, and Jacobs and Tait’s Nimzo-Larsen Attack.“ (Richard Palliser in the preface of "Unusual Chess Openings")
"If you have a liking for the unusual and daring, you will probably not find many books this year that are better than this one!" (Carsten Hansen on Chesscafe, Checkpoint September 2003)
"A marvelous investigation of the eccentric (so far!) development of the queen's knight on the first move ... I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get off the beaten path." (John Watson, The Week in Chess, Book Reviews #56)
"I
hope that both regular and alternative players will read and enjoy this book.
I myself certainly did, and not only because it was a pleasure to see the concepts
I had developed so long ago worked out in so many different ways. The most important
thing is that this book may stimulate more players to play this opening, for
I know that it can give a lot of playing pleasure and fun." (Dick van Geet,
New in Chess Yearbook #68)

Why should you play the King's Gambit? Well, there are many reasons:
- The King's Gambit
is a dynamic attacking system, and sharpens our instinct for the fine balance
between time, structure, and material.
- Only one opening is needed after 1.e4 e5, and that is 2.f4!. Forget trying
to memorize the Philidor, the Petroff, the Ruy Lopez, and the Latvian Gambit.
- The King's Gambit is great entertainment! It provides game after game of fun
positions full of strategic and tactical complexities.
- Finally, the King's Gambit is still a surprise weapon - especially the unusual
and highly aggressive lines examined in this book!
What is needed to play the King's Gambit with success? Above all, Creativity and the Will to Attack! And of course, The King's Gambit for the Creative Aggressor! Johansson is an imaginative Swedish enthusiast, whose re-search outlines a focused and promising repertoire for those seeking to win as White.
Some remarks concerning ordering and distribution
Our English
languages series is rather small. Therefore, distribution is far from perfect
yet.
You can order our books from some world-wide Chess book distributors, including
ChessCafe/USCF sales (U.S.A.), Chess & Bridge, BCM Shop (U.K.), New in Chess
(Netherlands), Niggemann (Germany) and some others. They might not be present
on smaller resp local shops. Also still not at Amazon, we're working on this.
In any case, you can order the books direct from us (see below), the shipping
rates are affordable; outside Europe the shipping time can be somewhat longer,
while airmail is rather expensive.
Order: Just send me an e-Mail with your wishes (or phone/fax/letter) we have no forms as such.
Payment:
As a rule we handle foreign orders with credit cards. If you don`t trust the
internet, you may sent us your credit card details by post, Fax or Phone (numbers
above).
Wire transfers: Those have acceptable rates now inside EU, so we accept it from EU citizens. Please no cheques, costs are too high for both parties. In doubt we also accept cash, preferably in Euro, also other currencies.
Postage and Delivery: Surface delivery takes about one week inside Europe, about two-three weeks outside Europe. This is just a rule due to our experiences, some times it happens much faster - this is beyond our control. Normally we give your orders on the same or next day to the postal office (if not, I´ll notify you!).
The postal
fees:
Up to 0,5 kg: 3,00 Euros/Dollars
(Colle, King's Gambit)
Up to 1 kg: 4,50 Euros/Dollars (1.Nc3, Chigorin)
Up to 2 kg: 9,00 Euros/Dollars
Up to 3 kg: 13,00 Euros/Dollars
